The Phorusrhacos is also known as The Terror Bird this animal was a gigantic meat eating bird that stood over 10 feet tall and had a sharp hooked beak. It was flight less and lightly built, with long legs and tightly fitting feathers, all of which helped it to run fast. For millions of years The Terror Bird was the top predator on the south American grassy plains. As a close relative of the living secretary bird, The Terror Bird is commonly thought to have used the same violent hunting technique, which involves sneaking up on prey through long grass. When in range of its victims, which included small horses and Macrauchenia, The Terror Bird would sell launch an attack, running at speeds of up to 70 kph (43 mph) and using its beak to bite and slash, thus disabling the animal it was chasing. Once trapped,the prey would be grabbed in the powerful beak and shaken violently before being eaten.
